The Karl Berger Improvisers Orchestra returns to the Shapeshifter Lab for its 70th performance in New York
On Thursday, May 1, the Karl Berger Improvisers Orchestra of 20+ professional string, woodwind, brass, and percussion soloists returns to the Shapeshifter Lab, Brooklyn, 18 Whitwell Place (off 1st St. btw 3rd and 4th Ave)

The KBIO continues to turn improvisational ideas developed in the 7:00 pm workshop/ rehearsal into a fully formed 8:15 pm performance. Conducted in Karl’s inimitable style, developed at the legendary Creative Music Studio, this orchestra of extraordinary improvisers explores original themes and motives and melodies from the world’s folk, classical and jazz traditions, as well as musical ideas that arise spontaneously. Each player is a soloist in a suite ranging from chamber settings to full orchestral expressions. One of the orchestra's trademarks is Ingrid Sertso’s story-telling vocalization and poetry.

From the rotating cast of soloists, with a solid core of regulars, this evening includes: Warren Smith, drums, John Hertenstein, John Pietaro, Hollis Headrick, percussion , Kevin Ray, bass, Jason Hwang, Sana Nagano, Ernesto Llorens, violin, Kenny Wessel, Harvey Valdes, Michael Gassmann, guitar, John Ehis, mandolin, Jason Candler, Blaise Siwula, clarinet, Matt Lavelle, cornet, Haruna Fukazawa, alto flute, Sean Sonderegger, flute, bass clarinet, Bohdan Hilash, contrabass clarinet, Yatsuno Katsuki, euphonium, Mercedes Figueras, sopr. sax, Patrick Brennan, Welf Dorr, Rocco Iacovone, alto sax, Ras Moshe, tenor sax, flute, Bill Ylitalo, baritone sax, alto flute, piccolo flute, Ingrid Sertso, vocals, and surprise guests.

Galeria Eskalera

La vida en Santiago - 9:00 PM

Calle 70 between 59&57
Mérida, Yucatan
Mexico
Price: free

Luciano Troja's "At Home With Zindars" is a short video about the award-winning CD At Home With Zindars by the Italian pianist Luciano Troja, who will perform a couple of songs from the album.
It is the journey of a pianist into the world and music of Earl Zindars, jazz and classical composer (Chicago 1927-San Francisco 2005). Earl Zindars is known, principally, for the friendship and musical kinship with the legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans, who played and recorded several of his compositions throughout his entire career.

Karl Berger's Improvisers Orchestra is a 25+ players’ ensemble of extraordinary professional improvisers. Conducted in Karl’s inimitable style, developed at the legendary Creative Music Studio, this orchestra explores original themes, melodies from the world’s folk traditions, compositions by Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman, as well as musical ideas that arise spontaneously in solo/duo/trio contributions by the players. Karl introduces a new approach and experience of blending and harmonizing improvised sound. One of the orchestra's trademarks is Ingrid Sertso’s uncanny vocalization and poetry.

Our last New York performance this season, promises to be an exceptional one, with violist Jason Hwang, trumpeters Steven Bernstein and Herb Robertson, and vocalist Tom Buckner joining in.

The complete list of players on January 10 includes:
Ingrid Sertso, Tom Buckner, vocals, Warren Smith, drums, Ken Filiano, Hill Greene, bass,  Peter Apfelbaum, tenor sax and flute, Steven Bernstein, Herb Robertson, Thomas Heberer, trumpet, Kenny Wessel, Harvey Valdes, guitar, John Ehlis, mandolin, Frederika Krier, Sana Nagano, Fung Chern Hwei, violins, Jason Hwang, Nicole Federici, viola, Adam Fisher, cello, Ed Rollin, oboe, Sylvain Leroux, fula flute, Ken Ya Kawaguchi, shakuhachi , Yatsuno Katsuki , euphonium, Blaise Siwula, Miguel Malla, Jason Candler, clarinet, Avram Fefer, bass clarinet, Patrick Brennan, Mercedes Figueras, alto sax, Hollis Headrick, John Pietaro, percussion.

    KARL BERGER'S IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA
    Tuesday June 12th 2012 7:00 workshop/9:00 performance
Conducted in Karl's inimitable style, developed at the legendary Creative Music Studio, this orchestra of extraordinary improvisers explores original themes, melodies from the world's folk traditions and compositions written by legendary improvisers such as Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman, as well as musical ideas that arise spontaneously. One of the orchestra's trademarks is Ingrid Sertso's uncanny vocalization and poetry.

Among the 20+ players in Karl Berger's Improvisers Orchestra are: Warren Smith (drums), John Pietaro (percussion), Hilliard Greene (bass), Ken Filiano (bass), Kenny Wessel (guitar), Harvey Valdes (guitar), Peter Apfelbaum (tenor sax, flute), Steven Gauci (tenor sax, Darryl Forster (tenor/soprano sax), Afram Fever (soprano sax, bass clarinet), David Schnug (alto sax), Mercedes Figueras (alto sax), Thomas Heberer (trumpet), Brian Groder (trumpet), Steve Swell, (trombone), Michael Lytle (bass clarinet), Blaise Siwula (clarinet), Sylvain Leroux (flute), Sana  Nagano (violin),  Frederika Krier (violin), John Ehlis, (mandolin), Ingrid Sertso (vocals).

    Parallax Pulse
Parallax Pulse is a hybrid sonic confluence - an attempt to cultivate a sound space in which the parallax sound worlds of modern "classical" music and jazz traditions can form a dialogue through spontaneous composition. In this democratic sound-space compositional structure and free improvisation guide acoustic and electronic musical voices through an exploration of the fundamental question mark of music. Parallax Pulse is Jonah Rosenberg (piano, compositions) Aleks Karjaka (Bass Clarinet), Blaise Siwula (Alto Sax), Martha Cargo (flute), Emma Alabaster (Double Bass).

    Ray Anderson, trombone

Named five straight years as best trombonist in the Down Beat Critics Poll and declared "the most exciting slide brass player of his generation" by the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, Anderson has shown remarkable range.  He has led or co-led a daunting assortment of tradition-minded and experimental groups, big bands, blues and funk projects and even a trombone quartet.  He is recognized as an original compelling composer and has recorded more than 70 of his own compositions with these groups.  In the tradition of Louis Armstrong, he is a colorful and exuberant performer and a spirited vocalist who induces smiles with his unusual split tones and screech effects.

    Lions For No Reason

Lions For No Reason is a spontaneous composition ensemble weaving a jazz and modern classical vocabulary through a musical interfacing of free music, funk, chamber music, hip hop, poetry and ethereal sound worlds.  Lions explores these musical worlds through notated compositions and entirely spontaneously generated ones, creating a metamorphic musical space that has the capacity to propel itself toward any instantaneously conceivable sonic potential.
